The Colorado State Patrol has reported that a woman died in a head-on collision on April 12, 2023. The fatal motor vehicle accident occurred on U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango at mile marker 75. Mile marker 75 is located on Hesperus Hill, about 3 miles east of the small community of Hesperus. The tragedy involved a Jeep Cherokee and Toyota Rav4. Early reports are that the Jeep was traveling west toward Hesperus when it crossed the centerline and collided with the eastbound Toyota. Sadly, the driver of the Toyota died on the scene while the driver of the Jeep was taken to a nearby Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

The Colorado State Patrol believes the deceased woman is from Mountain Village, Colorado and the surviving driver from Cortez, Colorado. The woman was traveling with her dog, who survived the crash.
