The collision took place a little after 7 p.m. when the driver of a southbound Dodge Ram 1500 lost control of the vehicle. The Dodge Ram crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a northbound Honda CRV near milepost 81. Public Information Officer Gabriel Moltrer provided details about the incident the following day.
Tragically, the driver of the Honda CRV succumbed to her injuries. The Colorado State Patrol reported that three passengers, a 27-year-old woman, a 27-year-old man, and a 24-year-old woman, all from St. Louis, Missouri, sustained serious injuries. Emergency services transported them to the hospital for medical treatment. The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 34-year-old man from Fairplay, was wearing a seatbelt and emerged uninjured, stated Moltrer.
Authorities suspect alcohol and excessive speed were contributing factors in the crash. However, the investigation is ongoing, as officials seek to gather more information surrounding the circumstances that led to the collision.
Following the incident, the Colorado State Patrol temporarily closed the highway, and it remained inaccessible until just before midnight.
