What do I need to prepare for my custody case?

So what do you do when you’re thinking about a custody case? How do you get prepared? There are a number of things that you can do.

Be organized

The first thing is to be organized. So if you’re regularly the person that is the primary parent for your child, document that. Keep a log. On this week, this is how many times I’ve picked up Johnny. This week, I put him to bed. This week, I fed him. Don’t be too OCD about this, though, but make sure to be accurate. Maybe a calendar works from that standpoint. Have reasonable goals. I think that’s really important.

Be realistic

A lot of people are going to say, “I want sole custody.” Everyone loves their child. But it’s not realistic that you’re going to have sole custody if the other parent isn’t a danger to the child. So you’ve got to be realistic in your expectations.
You also need a strategic plan for achieving your goals that are in the best interest of the child. That will also make sense from a standpoint of reality. And having a strategic plan really requires having really good lawyers.

Get really good legal guidance

So make sure that you’re getting guidance from a lawyer or a firm that understands child development and what the courts are looking for. This means, you have to do your research. Do your homework, and don’t rush into anything. Take your time. Do it once and do it right.
